One day, while he was merely twelve, Kala had a vivid dream of a girl named Udaimala, renowned for her unparalleled beauty. This dream stirred him deeply, leaving him restless upon awakening. Determined to find this mysterious girl, Kala embarked on a quest that led him to Kalnikot, Udaimala’s hometown.

Upon reaching Kalnikot, Kala managed to meet Udaimala and the two lovers concealed themselves for a while. Eventually, Kala approached Udaimala’s father, Dhamdeo, seeking her hand in marriage. Dhamdeo agreed, but on the condition that Kala pay a hefty sum as a bride-price.

Meanwhile, in the capital city of Champawat, a crisis unfolded as four renowned warriors issued a challenge to the ruler, Guru Gyan Chand, threatening the destruction of the capital if not met. In a dilemma, Guru Gyan Chand sought counsel from his advisors, who suggested that only Kala Bhandari possessed the strength to face these warriors.

Despite initial reluctance from his father, Kala was eventually persuaded to confront the warriors. Upon arriving in Champawat, Kala astonished Guru Gyan Chand with his youthfulness. Ignoring the skepticism around his capabilities, Kala boldly challenged the warriors.

In a fierce battle, Kala defeated the warriors, earning admiration and rewards from Guru Gyan Chand. Laden with accolades, Kala returned home and fulfilled his promise by sending the bride-price to Dhamdeo.

However, complications arose when another suitor, Rupu Gangsara, vied for Udaimala’s hand. Through bribery and lavish gifts, Rupu managed to secure Dhamdeo’s approval for marriage.

As the wedding day approached, Udaimala appeared in Kala’s dreams, pleading for his intervention. Undeterred by his father’s warnings, Kala disguised himself as a holy man and arrived at the wedding ceremony.

With cunning tactics, Kala orchestrated a massacre of Rupu’s party, sparing only Lula Gangola, Rupu’s younger brother. In a twist of fate, Lula fatally wounded Kala before meeting his own demise.

In the end, Udaimala, left alone amidst the tragedy, chose to embrace the funeral pyre, uniting in death with both Kala and Rupu. Thus, the tale of Kala Bhandari and Udaimala’s tragic love affair etched itself into the folklore of the Himalayas.
