Story of Jagdev Panwar

Story of Jagdev Panwar : Once upon a time, there was a kind and generous king named Jagdeo Panwar, who ruled over a place called Dharanagari. He had a cousin named Jai Singh Panwar who was the opposite – he was very stingy and didn’t like to share.

In a nearby village, there lived a man named Chanchu Bhat who had a daughter named Mahakali. Chanchu Bhat was sad because he didn’t have any sons to help him like the sons of another man named Betal Bhat. Mahakali, who was really the goddess Kali in disguise, told her father that she could earn more money by begging than all of Betal Bhat’s sons put together. So, Chanchu Bhat asked Mahakali to go to Dharanagari to beg for alms.

Mahakali first went to Jai Singh’s palace to ask for alms. Jai Singh tried to trick her by making all his courtiers dress the same way as him. Mahakali got angry and cursed Jai Singh for deceiving her. King Jagdeo saw this and invited Mahakali to his palace. He promised her that he would give her anything she wanted. Jai Singh, who wanted to outdo Jagdeo, also promised Mahakali double the amount of presents that Jagdeo would give.

When Mahakali went to Jagdeo’s palace to beg for alms, the king consulted his ministers about what kind of gift he should give her. Some suggested elephants, some suggested lands, and some suggested money, but Jagdeo was not satisfied. He decided to offer the head of one of his seven wives as a sacrifice to Mahakali. However, all of his wives refused except for one named Chauhani, who had been married to Jagdeo since she was seven years old. Chauhani bravely offered to sacrifice herself to please her husband.

Just as Jagdeo was about to cut off Chauhani’s head, Mahakali stopped him and said that she would not accept the sacrifice of a woman. Instead, she asked Jagdeo to offer his own head as a sacrifice. Jagdeo thought about it and agreed to sacrifice his own head. Mahakali then brought Jagdeo back to life using her divine powers.

Mahakali went back to Jai Singh and asked him to fulfill his promise. Jai Singh was embarrassed and didn’t know what to do. He didn’t have the courage to sacrifice himself or his son. So, Mahakali cursed him and left.

Jagdeo, grateful for Mahakali’s help, decided to dedicate half of his territory for the worship of Mahakali. He wrote this down on a copper plate, which still exists today, making Jagdeo Panwar’s name immortal.
