Invention of Ploughing : Once upon a time, the Guru created the earth and everything on it. One day, a human asked the Guru how they could live on this new land. The Guru decided to teach them how to grow food.
First, the Guru asked the lion to plow the earth, but the lion said it was below his status as the king of the forest. Then the Guru asked many other animals, but they all refused. Finally, the Guru asked the bullock, who agreed to help. The Guru was very happy with the bullock and blessed him, saying that in the future, people would worship him and celebrate him during the Dewali festival.
Next, the Guru called Melu, the ploughman, and asked him to make a plough. Melu suggested using expensive metals like gold, but the Guru said that poor people couldn’t afford such materials. So, the Guru asked Melu to make the plough from wood and the ploughshare from iron.
The Guru also set the wages for making a plough. Before, Melu had offered nine khars of paddy as payment, but the Guru said that poor people couldn’t afford that much. Instead, the Guru decided that the wages for making a plough would be one winnowing basketful for everyone.
Then the Guru blessed the bullock by putting silver caps on his horns and creating butter to rub on his neck, so the yoke wouldn’t hurt him. The Guru asked the swine to help rub the butter on the bullock’s neck, but the swine ate some of the butter and only rubbed a little on the bullock’s neck. This is why bullocks have soft necks today.
Sadly, the Guru cursed the swine, predicting that in the future, people would kill them by piercing their stomachs with sharp sticks. And that’s the story of how the Guru taught humans to plow the earth and grow their own food.
