Belwals of Belihat
Belwals of Belihat
Belwals of Belihat : Once upon a time, there was a family called the Belwals who lived in a place called Belihat. Their family tree went like this: Nagu, Bagu, Kagdas, Bagdas, Chhuri-jantar, Bharimal, Raghudipati, and Khundajeet. Khundajeet had eight sons: Bhawa Nand, Kashi Ram, Salig Ram, Ishwari Datt, Hari Datt, Nathi Ram, Rewat Ram, and Moti Ram.
One day, a terrible misfortune struck the Belwals. When they planted their seeds, they only grew husks, not the actual grain. Their wives could only give birth to daughters, their female buffaloes had only male calves, and their female goats had only male kids. Even their cows only gave birth to male calves. The Belwals tried praying to their family gods, but nothing changed.
So, they decided to visit an astrologer to find out why they were having such bad luck. The astrologer told them that their misfortune was due to the anger of a god named Badrinath, and they could make him happy again if they went on a pilgrimage to his temple.
The Belwals set off on their journey and stopped at a place called Bhatwa-ka-Sain. There, they saw a beautiful woman named Jusyani, who was also going on a pilgrimage. The Belwals were so attracted to her that they kidnapped her and took her with them.
When Jusyani’s husband, Chhotu Budera, found out what had happened, he went after the Belwals to get his wife back. The Belwals’ mother, Dangwalia, tried to stop them, but they wouldn’t listen. They stopped at a place called Amrika Sain, and while they were cooking, Chhotu Budera came to the camp. He and the Belwals started to argue, and a big fight broke out. Chhotu Budera killed all the Belwals, took his wife, and left.
The Belwals’ mother was very sad and went back home. The wives of the Belwals, now widows, wrote to their jajmans, Dhamdeo and Brahmdeo, who were the kings of a place called Katyurgarh. They told them what had happened to their husbands.
Dhamdeo and Brahmdeo were very upset, so they went to Amrika Sain with their armies to fight Chhotu Budera. They told Chhotu Budera that he was wrong for killing the Belwals, and they challenged him to a fight. After a long and fierce battle, Chhotu Budera and his army were defeated.
Dhamdeo and Brahmdeo returned home and celebrated their victory. They had defeated Chhotu Budera, who was the enemy of their priests, and they made sure everyone knew about their success.
