Story of Kali Harpal : Long ago, in the land of Dunagiri Hat, there was a prince named Kunwari Pal. He owned a fertile piece of land called Ratwari Sera, which yielded twenty khars of rice each harvest. However, this land couldn’t be cultivated due to a destructive boar named Kailu residing at Lohanigarh.
Determined to reclaim the land, Kunwari Pal led a team of workers to plant rice seeds and fortify its borders. As soon as they left, Kailu dreamt of the sowing and gathered sixty strong boars to ruin the farm. They demolished the fence and trampled the crops.
Upon discovering the devastation, Kunwari Pal mobilized an army to hunt down Kailu. A fierce battle ensued, but Kailu managed to leap over Kunwari Pal’s head and escaped. Frustrated, Kunwari Pal sought counsel from his advisors.
They suggested he seek help from Nandu Mahar, whose daughter Bimla possessed extraordinary strength and beauty. It was prophesied that a mighty hero would emerge from their union, capable of defeating Kailu. So, Kunwari Pal traveled to Dunagiri Hat to request Nandu’s hand in marriage for Bimla.
However, upon arriving, Nandu mistook Kunwari Pal’s group for enemies and released his powerful buffalos, Chaunria and Bhauneria, towards them. To prove their peaceful intentions, Kunwari Pal implored Nandu to summon his daughters. Bimla arrived and successfully captured the buffaloes using only her bare hands. Impressed by her power and grace, Kunwari Pal proposed to Nandu for Bimla’s hand. Agreeing, they held a grand wedding celebration.
Kunwari Pal and Bimla settled happily together. Eventually, Bimla became pregnant. Yet, the six other wives of Kunwari Pal grew envious and conspired to kill her newborn son. While Bimla was recovering from labor, they replaced her child with a stone and tricked both her and Kunwari Pal into believing that she had given birth to nothing but a rock. Heartbroken, Bimla was cast out.
She eventually discovered her infant son, whom she named Kali Har Pal, hidden among the thorn bushes nearby. With no shelter or support, Bimla raised her son in a remote cave, feeding him on wild fruits and nuts.
At age twelve, Kali Har Pal demonstrated exceptional hunting skills, often returning home with game larger than himself. Once, while resting on a hillside, he encountered traveling merchants. Mistaking him for a wild animal, they panicked and abandoned their belongings. Seizing the opportunity, Kali collected their riches and relocated to the mountains.
While visiting Nandu’s rice fields during transplantation season, Kali blocked the irrigation canal and demanded compensation from Nandu. Learning about his past, Bimla shared the heartrending tale of betrayal and abandonment. Enraged, Kali set out to confront Nandu. Upon arrival, Nandu welcomed him warmly and offered shelter.
However, Kali’s behavior became increasingly erratic. He damaged Nandu’s cattle and caused chaos around the village. One day, Nandu’s wife provoked Kali, daring him to face Kailu, the infamous boar terrorizing the region. Inspired, Kali embarked on a mission to slay Kailu. After a grueling battle, Kali emerged victorious, returning to Nandu’s house as a celebrated hero.
Meanwhile, Kunwari Pal prepared to crown his youngest son Chand Pal as king. Nandu relayed the news to Kali Har Pal. Infuriated, Kali wrote to Kunwari Pal, revealing his identity and demanding recognition as the rightful heir. Satisfied, Kunwari Pal welcomed Kali back, granting him the throne.
Despite his victory, however, Kali’s troubles weren’t over yet. His stepmothers continued their scheming, setting traps along the path leading to the palace. Unaware, Kali and his horse were fatally injured upon entering the trap. Grief-stricken, Kunwari Pal and Bimla succumbed to their sorrow. Thus ended the life of Kali Har Pal, the brave hero, taken prematurely by the treacherous actions of those closest to him.
