Story of Saunu and Birmu Brothers : Once upon a time, there were two brothers named Saunu and Birmu who lived in a village called Kalavatikot. Saunu had a wife named Kunjavati. Birmu was older and cunning, and he didn’t want Saunu to have any part of their ancestral property.

Birmu lied to Saunu, telling him that Kunjavati had caused their cattle to damage the other villagers’ crops, making them enemies. He convinced Saunu to kill his wife. Saunu believed Birmu and went to find his wife to kill her. When he found her tending to the cattle, he raised his dagger to kill her, but she begged for mercy. Kunjavati promised to go live with her father and remain faithful to Saunu. Saunu spared her, and she went to live with her father.

Saunu returned home and told Birmu that he had killed his wife. Birmu then sent his four sons, Gaja, Gaje Singh, Uddi, and Udai Singh, to drive Saunu out of Kalavatikot. Saunu wandered until he settled in a deserted village called Banjakot. He brought Kunjavati back from her father’s house, reclaimed some waste land, and became prosperous.

One day, Saunu went out hunting in the Hariali jungle, where Birmu was also hunting with his attendants. Saunu shot four deer and sent one to Birmu. Birmu became jealous of Saunu’s success and sent the deer to the King of Champawat, Guru Gyan Chand, along with a letter accusing Saunu of being disloyal to the King and hunting wild animals against the King’s orders. The King was very angry and sent a large army to punish Saunu. When Saunu saw the army approaching, he committed suicide, leaving Kunjavati behind.

Birmu went to Banjakot and pretended to be sympathetic to Kunjavati. He tricked her into giving him all her property, promising to support her if she came to live with him. But Kunjavati knew Birmu’s wickedness and refused to go with him. She was left in extreme poverty and had to support herself by begging. Kunjavati was pregnant when her husband died, and she gave birth to twin boys, Sheo Ram and Maya Ram.

Kunjavati feared that Birmu would try to kill her sons, so she took them to a dense forest called Sarupani and lived in a cave called the Dhoula cave. The twins were born heroes and performed extraordinary feats of strength, even as young children. One day, when they went out to fetch herbs and roots, Kunjavati forbade them from leaving the cave, warning them about a demon called ‘Ghogar.’ Curious, the boys went out and found a big tiger, which they thought was ‘Ghogar.’ They caught the tiger and brought it back to their cave to show their mother. When Kunjavati saw the tiger, she was frightened and told her sons to untie it, offering herself as a sacrifice if the tiger spared her sons. The tiger went back into the jungle.

On another occasion, Kunjavati told her sons not to cross a certain ridge from which they could see Kalavatikot. However, the boys’ curiosity got the best of them, and they went to the ridge, where they saw Birmu and his four sons plowing their land. They approached Birmu and told him about themselves. Birmu pretended to be affectionate toward them and challenged them to a wrestling match with his sons. Sheo Ram and Maya Ram agreed, and in the match, they accidentally killed two of Birmu’s sons.

Birmu was disappointed that the twins didn’t kill all his sons and invited them to dinner, hoping to poison them. However, the twins’ beauty charmed Birmu’s daughters-in-law, who didn’t poison the food. After dinner, Sheo Ram and Maya Ram went back to their forest home and told their mother everything. Kunjavati was upset, and she told her sons about how Birmu had treated them.

Sheo Ram and Maya Ram brought their mother back to Banjakot and went in search of Birmu’s surviving sons, Gaja and Gaje Singh. The brothers fought for nine days and nine nights, and eventually, Sheo Ram and Maya Ram killed Gaja and Gaje Singh, along with all their attendants. Maya Ram then went to visit his maternal aunt in Sidakot, where he was mistaken for an enemy and killed. Meanwhile, Sheo Ram invaded Kalavatikot, killed Birmu, and brought the four widows of Birmu’s sons to Banjakot.

When Sheo Ram learned of Maya Ram’s death, he was overcome with grief and killed himself with a dagger. Kunjavati, upon hearing about her sons’ deaths, fainted away. The only survivors were the four widows of Birmu’s sons. This tragic story happened because of Birmu’s wickedness and lies.
