Uttarakhand EV Charging Stations to Promote Emission-Free Travel on Char Dham Yatra Routes

Uttarakhand aims to establish a network of 154 EV charging stations on the Char Dham yatra routes to provide emission-free travel and promote electric vehicle adoption. The first phase will cost around Rs 40 crore and cover 12 routes in Garhwal and nine routes in Kumaon. The project is expected to inspire other states to reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

Uttarakhand, a hill state in northern India, plans to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on the Char Dham yatra routes to promote emission-free travel and preserve the environment. The state’s transport department aims to install a network of 154 charging stations, covering approximately 4,500 km of roads in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. The first phase of the project, which will cost around Rs 40 crore, will involve the installation of charging stations every 26 km on 12 routes in Garhwal and nine routes in Kumaon. The charging stations will be installed at 33 earmarked locations on Char Dham yatra routes, covering about 950 km within the next year.

The EV charging network will be set up to provide travelers with a seamless charging experience while also reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the government hopes that this project will promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the state. Furthermore, the charging stations will be set up in areas that lead to major pilgrimage and tourist destinations, making it more convenient for visitors to travel.

The government has sent the complete proposal to the Centre, seeking its approval and budget. Sanat Kumar Singh, Joint Transport Commissioner, said that “The proposal has been sent to the state government and the state government has sent it to the Centre. After getting the consent to make electric charging points on the Char Dham Yatra route, all the stations will be completed next year.”

In addition to the Char Dham yatra route, the Uttarakhand transport department plans to install charging stations every 50 km and 100 km across the state with its resources. By the year 2030, an electric charging point will be set up every 50 km across the state in the third phase.

The implementation of this project is a significant step towards a more sustainable future. The installation of charging stations across the state will help to promote the use of electric vehicles and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. The government hopes that this project will inspire other states to follow suit and help to reduce the environmental impact of transportation.
