BS-6 class petrol, electric, or CNG vehicles will replace the diesel autos. The decision affects over 10,000 diesel auto-Vikrams in the region

Uttarakhand Vikram Ban – The Divisional Transport Authority of Dehradun and Haridwar districts has announced that diesel autos and Vikrams will be phased out by the end of 2023 due to increasing pollution concerns. Vehicles older than ten years will not be permitted to operate after March 31, while all remaining diesel autos will be banned after December 31. To replace the banned vehicles, only BS-6 class petrol, electric, or CNG four-wheeler passenger vehicles will be allowed to operate in the cities.

This decision will impact approximately 10,000 diesel auto-Vikrams operating in cities such as Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Dakpathar, Herbertpur, Doiwala, Kalsi, Selakui, Rishikesh, and Haridwar, including cities such as Roorkee, Piran Kaliyar, Laksar, and Bhagwanpur. The new vehicles will be operated under a stage carriage permit on 18 designated routes that connect various areas within the cities.

Vikram operators who do not upgrade to the new vehicles by March 31st will be allowed to operate under contract carriage permit until December 31st, however, if they continue to seat passengers, their vehicles may be seized and fined. The decision to phase out diesel vehicles is in line with the directives of the High Court Nainital and the National Green Tribunal aimed at reducing pollution.

There have been reports of harassment from some Vikram drivers towards operators who have upgraded to the new vehicles. The enforcement team will seize vehicles found to be harassing other operators. The permit of operators who do not upgrade to the new vehicles by March 31st will expire, and they will need to obtain a new permit on a new vehicle. This policy is open to all individuals.

The move to Uttarakhand Vikram Ban phase out diesel autos is an effort to reduce pollution and improve the air quality of Dehradun and Haridwar districts. It is also a step towards supporting over 6 lakh salaried employees in Uttarakhand.
