Chamoli District Magistrate resettlement plan Joshimath land subsidence

The Chamoli District Magistrate has presented a plan for the resettlement of individuals affected by the land subsidence in Joshimath, offering three options including financial compensation, allocation of land for building homes, and construction of a building for rehabilitation. The options will be presented to the state cabinet for approval and the number of families that need permanent relocation will be determined in the future. The government has also taken steps to assist affected commercial establishments and students. The situation in JP colony area remains stable, with the water discharge declining and the number of houses with cracks unchanged.

The Chamoli District Magistrate has come up with a plan for the resettlement of individuals who were forced to leave their homes due to the land subsidence in Joshimath. The official has offered three different options for the affected residents.

The first option involves giving financial compensation to the owners of damaged lands or buildings as a one-time settlement. The payment will only be made after the land or building is registered in the state government’s name.

The second option includes providing up to 100 square meters of land for affected landowners or building owners to build their homes and receive compensation for their damaged buildings. If the affected person’s land is larger than 100 square meters, they will receive compensation for the remaining area. Before any payment or allocation of land, the affected person’s land or building must be registered in the state government’s name.

The third option calls for constructing a building on up to 75 square meters of land for the rehabilitation of the affected. If the value of the affected residential building or land is higher than the provided accommodation, the difference will be paid to the displaced person. In this option as well, the affected land or building must be registered in the state government’s name before anything else is done.

The three options will now be presented to the state cabinet for approval. The number of families that need permanent relocation will be determined after various technical institutions submit their reports to the government. The high-powered committee has also instructed that the electricity and water bills for affected commercial establishments be waived for six months and that students from three schools affected by subsidence in Joshimath be transferred to other schools with free transportation provided by the administration. The water discharge from an unknown source in the JP colony area has declined to 67 liters per minute and the number of houses with cracks remains at 863.
Additionally, the District Magistrate has proposed funding for retrofitting houses or buildings that have small cracks and are located on “safe” land. The final decision on disaster mitigation and stabilization of the area, toe erosion, and drainage plan will be made after the government receives the final reports from technical institutions.
