Story of Sumeru Rautela and Rani Surma : Once upon a time, there were two princes named Chand and Badal who lived in a place called Chandikot. Their family lineage went like this: Loki Pal and Triloki Pal, Than Chand, Bhan Chand, and finally Chand and Badal.

Badal was the older brother. They were very powerful chieftains and owned many villages, making them very wealthy. Each of them had seven wives, but they didn’t have any children, which made them very worried.

One day, Badal’s eldest wife, Kunjavati, found out she was pregnant. She had a strong craving for deer meat, so she asked Badal to get her some. Badal tried to give her different types of meat like mutton and chicken, but she only wanted deer meat.

So, Badal gathered a large group of men and went on a hunting trip. They searched the forests of Khairna and Dhoulana but couldn’t find any deer. They eventually stopped near some irrigated fields called Jabli Sera, which belonged to Chand and Badal. However, the Dewan of Delhi claimed the land and didn’t let them use it.

Badal was very angry that the Dewan, a Khasia, was stopping them from using their land. He called his brother Chand, and together with their men, they decided to plow the land and divert the water from the stream into the fields.

When the Dewan heard about this, he was furious. He was an old man with seven sons and fourteen grandsons. He went to the head of the water channel and broke it, stopping the water from flowing. When the water in the channel dried up, Chand and Badal thought their buffaloes might have broken it. Badal sent Chand to check on the buffaloes and fix the water channel.

As soon as Chand reached the spot, the Dewan, hiding in a bush, rushed out and cut off Chand’s head with a scythe, throwing it into the water channel. The water turned red with blood. Badal went to check on Chand and met the same fate. The Dewan killed him too.

The men of Chand and Badal returned home and informed the wives about the deaths of their husbands. The whole of Chandikot was in deep mourning, and the thirteen wives of Chand and Badal decided to commit suicide. However, Kunjavati, who was pregnant, was persuaded not to take her life. In time, she gave birth to a son.

The baby’s horoscope was prepared, and the Brahmans named him Sumeru Rautela. They said he would only survive if he was married on the fifth day after his birth. So, four Brahmans were sent out to find a bride. They searched far and wide but couldn’t find anyone suitable.

Finally, they learned about a princess named Surma, who was the daughter of King Sarang of Sarali Mandal. She was twelve years old, and many princes had asked for her hand, but she had rejected them all. The Brahmans of Chandikot met with King Sarang and requested his daughter’s hand in marriage for their prince, who they said was of marriageable age.

After much persuasion, King Sarang agreed, and an auspicious day was set for the wedding. However, the Brahmans begged not to be part of the traditional marriage procession, and instead, they performed the wedding with a dagger. When the marriage procession returned to Chandikot, Sumeru, who was just five days old, was placed in bed with Surma.

Surma was surprised to find out that the baby was her husband, but she accepted her fate and took care of him. Sumeru grew up to be a giant, even at the age of five. When he was twelve, he was strong enough to uproot big trees and tame wild tigers.

Meanwhile, the old Dewan learned about Sumeru and his marriage to Surma. He still held a grudge against Surma’s father, so he decided to kidnap Surma. He sent a clever woman to her, pretending to be Surma’s aunt and asked her to come with her to a water spring.

At the spring, the Dewan and his men kidnapped Surma and took her to his home. He wanted to marry her immediately, but Surma said she had taken a vow of celibacy for twelve years. The Dewan agreed to wait, but he kept her under a strong guard.

Kunjavati, Sumeru’s mother, heard about Surma’s kidnapping and sent men to search for her. When Sumeru was twelve, he asked his mother about his wife. She told him the truth about the Dewan and how he had killed his father and uncle. Sumeru was filled with rage and vowed to kill the enemy.

He went to Delhi, where the Dewan lived, disguised as a holy man. One day, a maid-servant of Surma went to the water spring for water, and Sumeru asked her about Surma. The maid told him about Surma’s vow of celibacy. Sumeru sent a letter to Surma through the maid, and they exchanged messages.

Surma told Sumeru about her kidnapping, and he decided to go and fight the Dewan to rescue her. He went to Delhi and disguised himself as a sadhu. One day, Surma requested the Dewan to allow her to host a feast for all the holy men in the town. Sumeru attended the feast, and after it was over, he stayed in Surma’s room without being noticed.

One day, the Dewan’s men saw Sumeru in Surma’s room and informed the Dewan. He surrounded Surma’s room with a large number of soldiers. Sumeru challenged the Dewan to fight him, and in the battle that followed, he defeated the Dewan’s army. He took out the Dewan’s eyes, plundered his house, and rescued Surma.

When they returned to Chandikot, there was great rejoicing, and Sumeru ruled over his people happily.
